FUNimation’s C&D Letters

by - on the 26 November, 2008 at 9.22 am

Funimation USA yesterday sent out various Cease and Desist letters to various fabsubbing groups across the internet to attempt to protect various licenses. Funimation USA claim to be acting upon their Japanese partners, and have demanded the all fansubs for Evangelion: 1.0 You (Are) Not Alone, SOul Eater, Spice + Wolf, Mishi-Uta, My Bride is a Mermaid!, D.Gray-man and Katekyo Hitman Reborn to cease immediately.

Normally this sort of announcement would mean that the above titles would all have been licensed in the USA. However, Funimation USA have confirmed that many of these shows are not licensed and they are simply acting upon instructions of various studios, such as Kadokawa, NTV, Media Factory and TV Tokyo Medianet.

This has caused a furore in the fansubbing and anime community as many fans are now uncertain how they will continue to watch their favourite shows as the shows are now in limbo. With no formal announcement stating they will be available on Crunchyroll or other digital distribution sites, or any announcement of an eventual DVD release, this action is likely to push fansubs deeper underground into a less morally fan community.

For all of these series, there is no word on a UK release as of yet. But many of the shows, such as Soul Eater are very popular online and it would be foolish not to hear an announcement in the near future.
