In May, Manga Entertainment announced that they will be releasing Freedom OVA, this title was previously only available as a limited release from Beez Entertainment, and thanks for the companies highly active Twitter feed, they have further confirmed that this series will most certainly be out in the UK on Blu-Ray.
Rather than just the norm, in the anime world, of a DVD release and a Blu-Ray release, Manga Entertainment are considering going down the option of a DoublePlay release, which means the OVA will contain both DVD and Blu-Ray. This is a method of selling that is used by most Hollywood movies these days and even the new Ghibili titles are on DoublePlay these days.
There’s still no confirmed release date, but with news like this, it’s likely to be the tail end of this year.
It’s been widely reported that two Studio Ghibli classics, Laputa Castle in the Sky and My Neighbours the Yamadas are to be released in Blu-Ray in the UK on the 9th May. This is due to Play.com putting the Blu-Ray edition of the films up for sale; however, at this moment in time there is no formal confirmation of this.
The UK release for Optimum’s films website currently does not confirm if this is correct and at the time of writing Optimum Releasing were unable to confirm the date’s accuracy. However, Play.com are often correct with their release dates of anime releases, so it’s highly likely that these dates are correct.
Update – 1st March 2011
Optimum today confirmed to News-Anime that Play.com is correct and both Laputa and My Neighbours the Yamada’s will be available in the UK onl Blu-Ray from the 9th May 2011 and will be confirming the full details alongside packaging information very shortly.

Manga Entertainment recently confirmed via their Twitter account that they have obtained the rights to release Dance in the Vampire Bund in the UK at some point this year.
At the present time no details are known regarding the release, in the UK. As soon as information comes to light, we will let you all know.
However, Funimation are the license holders in the USA and they’ve confirmed that Dance in the Vampire Bund will be available in both DVD and Blu-Ray and will be out in the Summer.
If we are truly to expect Vampire Bund this year, we may have a simultaneous release or one in late Autumn. As it’s a 12 episode series there is a decent possibility of seeing a Blu-Ray release.
Seeing as this is a short series and there’s a fair potential for good sales on the highstreet, a Blu-Ray is a fairly likely possibility in my opinion.
Today we reported that Manga Entertainment announced that they will be releasing Highschool of the Dead in June or July of 2011 on both DVD and Blu-Ray. Manga Entertainment also announced through the means of Twitter that they will be releasing Casshern Sins in the UK.
Jerome of Manga Entertainment confirmed today that Casshern Sins will be released in May or June of 2011. Details surrounding Blu-Ray are uncertain, due to uncertainty surrounding blu-ray for this title.
Casshern Sins tells the story of a world where robots have subjugated humanity after becoming self aware. Their leader, Braiking Boss, rules over the world with an iron fist until one day Luna is summoned by the people marked as the saviour of human-kind.
Manga Entertainment today announced that they have gained the rights to distribute the undead anime – Highschool of the Dead, which was one of the summer seasons hits this year in Japan.
Highschool of the Dead stars Takashi and his good friend Rei and her best friend Hisashi. Then a Zombie arrived at the school gate. Within a few minutes a zombie plague managed to spread across the school throwing them all into a panic and attempt to avoid being eaten by their former school-mates.
After breaking out of the school to discover the infection had spread across the world, they search for a safe place in the world that’s managed to avoid the zombie chaos….
Currently there are no firm release dates confirmed; however, Manga Entertainment are hoping for the releases to start in June/July 2011 with both a DVD and Blu-Ray release penned. Manga are also hoping to work with Sentai Filmworks for the Blu-Ray release in the UK. So lots of good news there!

Beez Entertainment, the European subsidiary company of Bandai Entertainment Group have recently announced that they are going to moving into the retail market.
Following on from Manga Entertainment, who opened up their online shop a while ago now, Beez Entertainment recently announced that they will start selling Beez Entertainment titles from their own online store. Over the coming weeks there will be plenty of development on the store and with many new additions to their current catalogue of available titles.
Today is the first day of the London MCM Expo and as always the big three anime distributors in the country are in attendance and are announcing things left, right and centre. Unfortunately News-Anime.com are unable to attend on Saturday this year, although we may be there tomorrow depending on how things pan out.
However, UK Anime Network News have a very comprehensive list of updates as they were live at the event – live Twittering away. Below is a roundup of news from the big three:
- Moribito, Blade of the Immortal and Slayers Revolution and Evolution-R confirmed for UK Release
- MVM will be moving way from single disc releases in favour of 2 disc releases later in the year – which is now UK standard
- MVM will continue to license live-action Japanese movies
- Eden of East will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in November
- Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex – Solid State Society will be on Blu-Ray before Christmas
- Vampire Knight is likely to see a release before Christmas
- Baccano has been confirmed as a release at some point
- Manga are looking into picking up Kanon (assuming 2006) and Bamboo Blade.
- Manga also admitted to being interested in One Piece and Dragonball Z to the UK but are struggling
- Manga also advised that they are not keen on bringing Sgt. Frog to the UK, much to my personal disappointment
- Beez announced that they will be releasing Durarara!! which will be subs only. They will consider a re-release should dubs become available in the future.
- Gundam 00 and Gundam Zeta movies will be released
- Outlaw Star will be released as part of their value Anime Legends range
In interesting industry related news, due to the new Dangerous Cartoons Act, all three distributors are having to carefully consider what they pick up due to cuts enforced by the BBFC. They also discussed how sales and profits are working - 5,000 copies is a good release for Beez whilst Manga confirmed that the amazing Ouran High School Host Club have sold 15,000 copies to date.
All distributors were keen to remind fans to purchase releases legitimately and wait for releases until they hit the UK so that the profits can continue being pumped into the UK and MVM confirmed that the majority of their anime related profits go straight back to Japan. Manga also confirmed that they are interested in setting up a UK streaming site which would involve the Manga website and iTunes.
Again, we have to thank UK Anime Network News for the information listed here.

It has recently been confirmed by E1 Entertainment, that the CGI version of Astro Boy, which was on general release in the UK earlier on in the year, will have a DVD release date of the 31st May 2010. Unfortunately, his son is in love with science as well and sneaks into one of his experiments that goes horribly wrong and leaves his father grief stricken. In an attempt to pacify his greif he brings his son back to life as a robot only to discover that it’s not the same person and turns his back on him. Astro Boy is then left feeling dejected and turns his back on the world he knows to only find out that he really loves it in the end.
Astro Boy is a great film and is a perfect for all of the family.

In an interview with UKA, Manga Entertainment have confirmed that their up and coming release of Evangelion 1.11 – You Are (Not) Alone, will be available in both Blu-Ray and DVD upon release. In the same interview Manga have also confirmed that they the rights to the theatrical release of the film, Evangelion 1.01, although there is currently no confirmation as to whether this will reach a DVD release.
Evangellon 1.11 is the first in a planned quartet of films retelling the original Neon Geneis Evangelion series. Currently there are three versions of this film, 1.0, 1.01 and 1.11, all of which are exactly the same but with each version fix errors or enhance the visual quality of the film. The exception to this rule is 1.11, which contains a further three minutes of footage.
As with every week, DVDs are released in the UK. Sometimes there are many and sometimes there are few. This week there are a lot of great DVDs that are now available for general purchase, and those DVDs are:
