MVM Entertainment are now known for releasing box sets of their older and new material and they have recently confirmed that they are going to be releasing the following shows in a box set:
- Tower of Druaga – which was previously going to be a two disc collection of the first season – it’s now going to be a complete box set release.
- Chobits – it seems a return the UK in a complete box set
- Desert Punk – released last year will see a re-release as a box set
- Shana – again released last year will see a box set collection
- Gungrave – again a recent release but will now be released again.
This is great news for bargain hunters as a box set is always more cost effective than purchasing the single releases. Not forgetting that they are a good collection of decent anime, Desert Punk especially is one worth picking up if you’ve not already got it.

It is being reported by various sources that the parent company of Manga Entertainment, Overture Films, is likely to be sold in the coming weeks. Manga Entertainment has various parent companies; however, the parent company of Overture Entertainment, Starz Media, who in turn are owned by Starz LLC, whom are in turned attributed to the Liberty Capital Group and Liberty Media Corporation own various other companies. Such as Manga Entertainment globally, Anchor Bay Entertainment in the US and Film Roman in the US to play with, it’s likely that different buyers will be interested in each of these specialist companies.
This is still to be confirmed by Starz LLC formally; however, there have been some high level resignations at other subsidiary companies in the Starz LLC family. Executives at Overture Films recently resigned with almost immediate affect, citing: “due to differences over the strategic direction of the company”.
Manga Entertainment UK’s Jerome Mazandarani announced on the official Manga Entertainment Twitter feed:
“Our parent company Overture may or may not be up for sale! It’s not unusual. Nothing to worry about”.

Yeah, it’s Monday. The prospect of the end to the hung parliament may be in sight and frankly it’s just not as important as this week’s anime release…. well, that’s a slight exaggeration but something’s got to take our minds off of it. This week there is only one new series being released and that series is:
Now of course, this series has already been released in two box-sets, but if you’ve not already got the two single releases this anime is well worth the buy. We reviewed the two single releases and you can see the reviews here and here.

It has recently been confirmed by E1 Entertainment, that the CGI version of Astro Boy, which was on general release in the UK earlier on in the year, will have a DVD release date of the 31st May 2010. Astro Boy will have a standard definition and a Blu-Ray version release of the same day and it’s perfect timing for the half-term holidays in the UK.
Astro Boy features the voices of Nicholas Cage, Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell and Charlize Theron and the story centres around a young boy who’s father is one of the best scientific minds of the day. Unfortunately, his son is in love with science as well and sneaks into one of his experiments that goes horribly wrong and leaves his father grief stricken. In an attempt to pacify his greif he brings his son back to life as a robot only to discover that it’s not the same person and turns his back on him. Astro Boy is then left feeling dejected and turns his back on the world he knows to only find out that he really loves it in the end.
Astro Boy is a great film and is a perfect for all of the family.

In Japan there are hundreds, if not thousands of designs that feature random bits of English on clothes. When an English person sees this it’s often something to make fun of as Engrish. In the UK the direct opposite has been happening a lot recently, with oriental characters appearing on clothes more and more frequently.
So for the most part, online designer and retailer Terratag have bucked the trend and taken everything a step further and are designing clothes with an Eastern theme and with anime themes.
As Terratag are so lovely and they want to show everyone some love in these chocolatey times they’re doing a little promotion. Free shipping on all items purchased before the 12th April 2010.
Terratag are in dozens of retailers across the country and their designs and quality are top-notch – I can personally vouch for this as I have a good few items of clothing from Terratag which wash well, don’t fade and deliver very quickly.
You can check on Terratag’s designs here.

Not a real Chinese Pirate...
It’s been published today in The Times newspaper that the Japanese animation industry estimated it lost $2.4 billion (227 billion yen or £1.6 billion) owing to piracy in China.
It has long be said that piracy in China is costing the anime industry across the world a significant amount of money; however, Japan have now managed to put an actual figure against everyone’s guesses. To put this into perspective, this is more than twice the amount that Japan made in profit from foreign exports of anime.
A spokesperson for Production IG (makers of Ghost in the Shell and many other huge hits) stated:
..that short of closing down the internet altogether, there was little the company could do to stop piracy.

The Barbican Centre in London is well known for it’s love of anime. The Barbican has ran a season called Japanimation since 2006, which has been spearheaded by the co-author of the Anime Encyclopaedia – Helen McCarthy. Recently there have been some new developments at The Barbican Centre which has led to many rumours floating around the internet – such as the end of Japanimaion.
These rumours are so strong that they have even managed to penetrate the national, mainstream media such as The Guardian. There is an understandable concern that with these changes at The Barbican that unique cinema experience will be impacted and different cultures’ entertainment will be ignored and fall back away into obscurity.
Fortunately this is not the case and Helen McCarthy has gone on record on her blog saying:
Japanimation, like everything else on the Barbican Cinema schedule, will adapt to changing circumstances. We may have to fit around the builders, but we don’t intend to disappear.
This is great news to the anime community at large as it means we will continue to see Ponyo, Mai Mai Miracle, GitS and various other anime that Helen kindly organises for the viewing populace. The most vital part about the Barbican is that it’s not a seedy, back alley, underneath a huge store indie cinema, it’s a well known, respected and Government funded institute. This means people have confidence in it and what’s being shown.
